History essay questions
Must choose three topics to write, each essay should be 500 words.
1. How have imperialism and decolonization affected the patterns of modern world history? What
problems of the modern world are attributable to this issue?
2. How did the Glorious Revolution, the American Revolution, and the French Revolution alter the
world’s perceptions about governmental authority and legitimacy?
3. In the 20th Century, western states fought three global wars – the First World War, the Second
World War, and the Cold War. Thinking about the causes, do these wars share any common
characteristics?
4. The period since the Columbian encounter with North America can be characterized as the
hegemony of the West. Western ideals of modernization – individual rights, industrialism,
democracy, and secularism – were imposed through a series of imperial conquests. How did the
hegemony of the West affect Asia, Africa, and Middle East? Use examples from the issues
covered in the course to justify your answer.
5. In 1500, the world was filled with empires that justified their power upon religious dogma and
theology; in 2000, the world was filled with national states founded on ideas of ethnic autonomy,
popular sovereignty, and constitutional law. Do you agree or disagree? Defend your position with
evidence from the course.
