Exercise #2 – Identifying Evidence-Based Design Case Studies
The purpose of the INDS 740: Contemporary Issues in Interior Design course is
• to promote design responsibility by examining a variety of issues that currently
challenges the design professions in general and interior design practice and
education specifically;
• to provide opportunities for students to develop and express individual thoughts and
opinions about contemporary issues interior designers face; and
• to prepare students for being well informed and active members of the design
community.
In an effort to fulfill these goals, it is important to a) understand evidence-based design and
b) understand the critical role of this approach in contemporary design.
Students are asked to develop an analytical essay related to evidence-based design within
one design placetype. Placetypes may include, but are not limited to hospitality, education,
childcare, healthcare, universal design, retail, workplace, or industrial settings. If evidencebased
design focused on sustainability is the desired focus, case studies should be
representative of the same placetype , i.e. sustainable schools.
The analytical essay (8-12 pages including images) should feature the following:
1. A paragraph defining evidence-based design, including a definition of evidencebased
design derived from the literature.
2. Two to three paragraphs citing how evidence-based design has been used to
improve user outcomes within the placetype selected.
3. A critical analysis of two case studies presenting evidence-based design approaches
using annotated visuals, text, diagrams, charts and other documentation.
4. Summary concluding paragraphs comparing and contrasting the evidence-based
design approaches used in the two case studies.
5. APA style in-text and end-text citations providing references for all information not
personally generated, including paraphrased text, images and visuals.
Points will be granted for thoroughness, organization, clarity, extensiveness, personal insight,
justification, graphic formatting, demonstration of understanding of evidence-based design
and fulfillment of assignment requirements.
For all assignments, proper English grammar and spelling are expected. Please be sure to
proofread your submissions before submitting your assignment. Citations of direct quotes and
any borrowed information are to be documented with proper APA 6th Edition style.
