Introduction

Science is a field that entails the study of our natural environment with its prevailing conditions and events in a particular way to deduce important facts in life that attempt to explain complex situations. The facts obtained are developed into referable principles that guide our understanding on various problem-solving scenarios in our scenarios. Therefore, science is pragmatic since it involves investigation by numerous tests that are coordinated and merged together to form a valid conclusion. In the modern world, science has become the main theme in the lives of most people though some critics believe that they can still survive without science. On the other hand, proponents argue that when scientific methods are applied in real life situations, people will have a basis for their thoughts because science applies rationality and reason to all instances. According to Gimbel (2011), scientific method involves observation, question, hypothesis, experimentation, analysis and conclusion. Science disqualifies superstition and guessing and defines the universe in a credible order of experiments on laws and theories. This paper aims to explain the order of science in our lives and the scientific methods we use in solving problems.

Scientific Method

Scenario 1

You arrive home late at night. You walk up to the front door, unlock it, and reach in to turn on the light switch located just inside the front door. The light does not come on! Now what? At this point, you will definitely go through quick brainstorming on act to remedy the situation. The brainstorming that will cause action includes five steps that happen subsequently. The first step is observation and here, you will look around to confirm the darkness and attempt the switch again to find out if it is still not working. If it is still dark, the next step is to question whether there is power because if it is a case of no power, everyone in the same environment should experience the same problem. If you look around and confirm that yours is a special case, the next step in your mind is to develop your own hypothesis about the situation. You evaluate the problem and give it a tentative approach involving predictions. You will probably deduce that if there is no power in your house, the other people in your environment should also face the same predicament.

The fourth step requires you to conduct an experiment to confirm if there is power in your neighbors’ houses. This is rather a quick observation that could be justified if you peep through your window. The fifth step is analysis. After rapidly experimenting on the power condition, you analyze your hypothesis judging by your findings. If there one or all the other houses in the neighborhood have lights, your hypothesis does not hold water. However, if they do not have lights you can claim your hypothesis. While considering the errors that may be involved in your deduction. If your prediction is valid, the error may be that there is darkness in the other houses because nobody is home. If it is invalid, the error may be a complex problem in the generator that affected every house in the neighborhood including yours. You can therefore draw conclusion that would explain why the lights went off. You will therefore conduct revised experiments to compare the analyses then draw a solid conclusion.
Scenario 2

You wake up late in the morning and you hurriedly enter the shower so that you can rush for work. It is cold, so you want a hot shower but when you turn the handle for the red tap, the shower is not hot at all. What do you do? Since the scientific method in this context involves a rapid mental and physical process to arrive at a deduction, the five steps will still apply. The first step here is observation, which you do when you feel the coldness of the water. You will probably let the shower run as you wait for the water to be come hot. The next step involves you developing a question for the situation. Here, you  will trying to find out whether the problem is only in the bathroom taps or in all taps in the house since all sinks have red and blue taps. You will also ask yourself if a power surge caused the water heater to malfunction.

In the third step you will question the entire water system in the house has a problem or not. If all red taps in the house do not produce hot water, then chances are high that entire water system in your house is faulty. This is therefore the third step that requires you to make your hypothesis on the problem. Here, you could also say that a slight power surge could have caused the malfunctioning of the bathroom water heater if the problem is only in the bathroom. The fourth step involves experimentation where you are likely to confirm whether red taps in the other sinks are producing hot water or not. The fifth step is analysis of your hypothesis. If the other red taps produce hot water, your hypothesis on the malfunctioning of the water heater is valid. If they are not, then the hypothesis is void and the error could be that the entire water system failed to produce enough pressure to work in effect with the water heater. The error in your valid hypothesis could be that there are loose wires in the heater switch that does not conduct heat to the shower. With the five steps, you will be able to draw a conclusion of the problem and try to solve it. You could repeatedly revise your experiment to derive a logical conclusion.

Why I Cannot Live Without Science

            1) On a typical day, I wake up in the morning as a response to the alarm I set on my phone. I make breakfast on the gas cooker, brush my teeth, have a hot shower, and take my breakfast, iron my clothes, put on my clothes then leave the house. Science applies in each step because for the phone alarm to ring, electronic science was needed to make that application work in the first place. The gas was scientifically proven to power the cooker and there is physics behind the functioning of the water heater to produce a hot shower. Ironing my clothes would not be possible if a scientist did not discover the functioning of an electronic iron box. The toothpaste I use is also a product of scientific invention. As a matter of fact, the facial and body oil I use to smoothen, my skin is a product of biological scientific discoveries.

2) Science has changed my life because it gives logic to all my life experiences. In this civilized global society, modernization is constantly encroaching in our lives in different new forms that mainly comprises of technology and other innovations (Kaku, 2011). For us to realize the effect of the new technology and innovation in our lives we need science to explain to us the reason for change and the consequences involved. I used to work constantly on my computer without critically thinking of what makes it work to solve my mathematical calculations but science has taught me the laws of mathematics and physics that play a major role in the activity. These laws resulted from careful experimentation and analysis and valid conclusions. It would quite odd to walk on the earth’s surface and not have the slightest idea why we do not fall or fly. Thanks to the law of gravity, we can understand the center of gravity that holds us family to the ground. Therefore, my life develops meaning when I employ science because I can experiment the claims and arrive at the same conclusion.

3) There are few negative impacts that has science has brought and they include environmental, health and some technological impacts. In the process of further discovery, industrial science has caused depletion of the ozone layer across the world. The release of toxic gases has resulted to global warming and imbalance in climate. There is no doubt medical science has attempted to sort out health issues however, there are adverse medical prescriptions that cause death if not properly addressed. Technological science aims at making life easier for human beings and so far, most people are engrossed in technological inventions that have stolen their social time with loved ones making them obese because of less physical activity or exercise.

4) I do not believe I could survive without science because it dictates my health. Health problems are numerous in our world today and their mitigation can be accredited to science because scientific research has made vaccines and cures available. Scientists have and are still working on their research by employing the five steps of scientific method. Vaccines for fatal diseases such as tuberculosis, polio, and measles and so on were earlier developed to prevent people from contracting them. The scientific expertise applied has proven to be effective because with just an injection, health hazards are gradually reducing among children and adults in all parts of the world. Without science, the human anatomy could not be studied and therefore one would not deduce which part of the body needs medical attention. If there was no science, the rate of deaths would double the current one. Hence, science is the source of prevention and cure since it provides a rationale for the disease diagnosis. Scientists are still working on a cure for HIV/AIDS. A positive gesture of science is that antiretroviral drugs were developed to boosts the immunity of those who are already infected. They can live life normally just as those who are not infected. Science actually works on proof unlike superstitions thought of to justify the origin of HIV/AIDS blindly.

Conclusion

5) The course has had positive impact on my view of science. I am more convinced that science is a necessity in our lives because it is intertwined with our daily life experiences. It revolves around our computers, our health, and our history, the food we eat and even the understanding of the human anatomy and how it works. The most justifiable point about science is that it has proof that backs its claims in any related field. Scientific theories of evolution of man can be shown by excavation and examination of fossils. Scientific methods used in research clearly outline the steps followed and errors are included. Analysis is systematic and recognizable and disqualifies vague beliefs that instill fear or false hope. For that reason, science is the backbone of understanding and interpreting the universe in which we are. It will shape our future (Kaku, 2011). Since scientific research is continuing, scientists will be able to develop strategies to counter most of the negative impacts. Thus, I cannot live without science.
