Joseph Kony
I think that what Kony does is very wrong. Considering that the Lord’s Resistance Army was a movement set up by the Acholi women with the aim of resisting the oppression of the government, turning to be the oppressor is very wrong. Kony cannot be considered a person who fights for right; rather he is interested in rebelling against the government. In addition, abducting children and brainwashing them to make them soldiers is an atrocity that is damaging to the children. Therefore, what Kony has been doing is very wrong and since no child needs to be abducted or even raped. More so, every person should have freedom to live their life in accordance with the law, and nobody has the permission to put misery in the life of another person. This is what Kony has done, which is quite wrong for everyone involved.
If Kony were brought to justice, it would be a good thing to many people including the children he has turned into soldiers, families that he has dispersed and displaced as well as the community that he has deprived of peace. Bringing Kony to justice would mean putting an end to the Lord’s resistance army since most of his soldiers are children who can easily reform and fit into a normal social life. Bringing Kony to justice would be good as long as his army will be dissolved. In addition, this would stop many deaths of innocent people and children who are brainwashed, as well as girls and women who suffer rape most of the time. Above all, it would bring peace to communities that have suffered long enough.
Kony should be brought to justice by those who he has committed crimes against. However, most of the time, victims are usually defenseless, making it hard for them to bring such a person to justice considering he has an army. Therefore, the people to bring him to justice can be the government of the country that he has committed the atrocities against, which is the Ugandan government. Other countries can help, but this has to be allowed by the Ugandan government since it happened in their soil.
If the government of Uganda cannot do it alone, then external support could be of great help. Considering America has been in the forefront in ensuring peace in many countries across the world, their help would be appreciated. Justice in Uganda affects not only the country alone, but also other countries around, and lack of stability will have a negative impact around the region. However, this should only be sought when the government declares it cannot bring him to justice. In addition, the Lord’s Resistance Army has moved to other countries neighboring Uganda, and left the same kind of atrocities. Therefore, the involvement of America would be of great help in ensuring justice.
The level of support would be dependent on the situation as well as the country itself. However, in my view, I think the involvement should include providing technology and weapons, as well as training for the Ugandan soldiers. America cannot help the Ugandan government forever; therefore, the government should have a means of stopping such atrocities as well as preventing them in future. Rather than having to track down and arrest Kony only, America should help the Ugandan government in training its soldiers to deal with such circumstances so that they can be in a position to maintain peace in the long term. Providing troops to track him down will only provide a short-term solution to such incidents. Therefore, training and providing the necessary equipment is necessary for a long-term solution.
