Lacoon and his Sons – An Anthropological Analysis

Construct a research paper on the Roman Sculpture “Lacoon and his Sons” using anthropological concepts and terms – discuss the Roman culture at the time this particular sculpture was created – and compare and contrast the Roman culture to that of the culture of  Hinduism.

The final paper paper MUST contain the following elements described here:

1. Use ONE ASPECT of George E. Marcus’ multi-sited locating strategies (following the “Thing,” “People,” etc, from Module 2).

2. Employ at least THREE of the theoretical concepts that you have learned from the modules. Choose concepts that apply to the artwork Lacoon and his Sons.

3. You must use and properly quote at least FOUR readings from the modules and/or assigned readings from the discussions. (Note to the Writer: There will be several articles attached under “additional materials”. Any four of these articles can be referenced in the final paper).

4. You must incorporate at least SEVEN anthropological vocabulary words that we have learned in this class module. (Note to the writer: the modules – with vocabulary terms have been uploaded in the “additional materials” section).

Define the parameters for this paper. Explain the society from which it came. Homogenous? Multicultural? Apply a Boasian analysis of it. In other words, explain, briefly, how this art developed, or may have developed taking into consideration the society from which it came, the materials and technology at hand, and the geographical environment (Note that this will require a little research. Cite sources, please.)
Apply either a structuralist or a symbolic interpretation to the chosen art.
Analyze and describe how this piece of art may be culturally interpreted within a framework of power and politics. Are there multiple interpretations for the meaning this art has to the people who have it?

Try to answer these four questions:
• Who is telling the story?
• What is missing from the story?
• How might the story look from a local person’s perspective?
• Are there competing local perspectives?
Apply an analysis of access, authenticity and authority to the written representations that you find about the art. Do you think the artist had a high level of access? How does the artist establish a position of authority about the subject? Does the information seem authentic? Does the artist employ Geertzian thick description or any other approaches.

Consider how this art piece is displayed or presented in a museum, a book, and on the Internet. Answer the following:
• Who presents the art?
• Do the natives take part in the planning?
• Who is it presented for?
• The Public? Scholars?
• People of the culture?
Write a brief analysis of the representation according to Newton’s typology and access, authority and authenticity.
