800-1000 words
You will consider how a characters actions and motivations in the selected short story affect his/her interactions with other characters and understanding of the world. Your argument should communicate the novels theme, showing what larger point the story is making about (for example) technology, gender, social class, materialism, sexuality, history, culture, et cetera. You must think deeply and provide significant analysis in this essay. Be certain to include direct textual support for your ideas (in the form of quotations from the text). Mere plot summary will not be accepted.
TITLE: Dont just give the title of the work you are discussing or write Fiction Essay. Your title should not be set off in any way (but capitalize major words).
INTRODUCTION: Remember your audience, and get us involved from the very start. The introductory paragraph should at least the do the following:
Grab the readers attention
Present the essays thesis Prepare the reader for what to expect in the essay
Preview the essays organizational plan
Establish the tone for the essay (Funny? Sad? Ironic? Resigned?)
Create a transition into the first body paragraph
BODY: The body should offer paragraphs with clear topic sentences supported by careful illustrations from the work you are discussing. Be sure to support both quotations and paraphrases with parenthetical citations of the text.
WORKS CITED: You must include 1-2 source credible sources in addition to the novel. Failure to incorporate research will result in a failing grade. Failure to include any MLA citation/documentation will result in a zero.
LANGUAGE and TERMS: The essay should refer to literary terms and use them correctly, but you should only refer to these terms as they help to illustrate your argument about the story. You should avoid the word use, as in Chopin uses the chair before the window to underscore Louise Mallards discontent. Better phrasing would be, By placing the chair before the window, Chopin underscores Louise Mallards discontent.
CONCLUSION: The conclusion has several jobs to do, not the least of which is to wrap up the essay. Avoid bringing up new ideas in the conclusion, but do give the reader something to think about afterward. It is often worthwhile to refer the reader to something you said in the introduction to bring the piece full circle. Do not simply restate the thesis.
TONE: You should write in 3rd person. (The words you, I, and their derivatives like your have no place in this essay.) Also, write in literary present tense. Discuss the events as if they are happening now rather than in the past.
ESSAY STANDARDS: Take your proofreading seriously, and refer to your handbook to help you avoid errors. Certainly allow time to proofread carefully, and get help from your instructor or the Tutoring Center staff as you work. Understand that mechanical and spelling errors can fail an otherwise worthy essay.
PEER REVIEW / INSTRUCTOR FEEDBACK: You will find that it is often a good idea to have another person look over a document before the final reader sees it to give you a fresh, critical way of looking at your essay. You will find that it is often a good idea to have another person look over a document before the final reader sees itnot only to see if the spelling is ok, but also to consider the ideas and how they are presented well before the draft is ready for the final proofreading step. This is where peer responses come in, whether you meet with a classmate or someone at the Tutoring Center. I am also available to look at your essay. I will read up to one paragraph via email or up to two pages if you meet with me in my office.
