Summary of Article
Money (P35-37)
In this topic Morrie and Mitch are engaged in discussion about the value that individuals attach to their belongings. The topic was ignited by Mitch when he showed to Morrie a quote of Ted Turner from a newspaper. In the quote, Ted Turner who was a billionaire and founder of CNN argues that he did not want his tombstone to read that he never owned a network. In response to the quote Morrie indicated that people often have the same problem of putting their values on wrong things. According to Morrie, materialistic things have no or little significance to individual’s life since they will be left behind when people die (Albom 36). Morrie insisted that people have been brainwashed by the notion that owning more money and other material things is good. In the article Morrie argued that love is more important than material things such as money and power. The negative attitude of Morrie regarding material things was illustrated by the fact that he has not bought anything new in his house for a number of years except some few medical types of equipment. Morrie also noted that people are confused regarding what they need and what they want. According to him, people need food and love rather than things such as cars and money. People should show love to other people by offering various helps to the individuals. They should use their talents to help others who are needy in the society.
Love/Marriage (P37-44),
The first part gives a reflection of that surrounds the life of Morrie back from his days at the university to the present. The story highlights how Morrie is a loving person who normally cares about the welfare of people from his days as a professor up to date. There are various visitors who normally visit him indicating that he was loved by people. Despite of his ailing condition Morrie was still able to spare time and entertain his visitors. Morrie had also previously performed shows with other people who were still requesting him for more shows with him (Albom 40). But he was worried that the people may not come in appropriate time before he is unable to speak. Moririe also indicates that he has managed to have many people who loved him that he his sure that he will not be forgotten once he his dead. Mrorie was always lovely to his visitors and will normally make them smile whenever they visited him. He also advised Mitch not to be in a hurry rather than put his energy on people. The story ends when Morrie giving an account of his father who showed no love to his children and eventually died of heart attack after being robbed by thieves.
The other part of the story also revolves around Morrie, Mitch and his wife Janine. Mitch wife has not met with Morie before and after persistent from Morrie, Mitch took his wife Janine to Morrie’s place. This was the first encounter between Morrie and Janine. They engaged in various stories and gave Morrie the photos of their weeding to watch. Janine being a talented singer entertained Morrie with a song which made him to shed tears. After the song Morrie, Mitch and Janine engaged in stories regarding the problems encountered by people through marriages. Morrie gave Mitch and Janine advice on marriages based on his experience. Current marriages are faced with numerous problems according to Morrie. This can be attributed to the rush for marriages or selfishness in engaging in love relationships. Morrie has been able to live a happy marriage with his wife Charlotte for over 40 years due to the understanding of each other’s feelings. Marriages also come with a lot of challenges. To avoid the challenges of marriages certain rules have to be observed by the partners. Some of the rules to be observed in marriages include respect for each other, compromise, being open and having a common set of values.
Our Culture (P44-46)
Morrie indicated that according to the current culture people are only mean when they become threatened (Albom 43). All people in the current society are threatened and this makes them to become interested in personal gains and achievements. Attaching more importance to money is part of the current culture. Morrie emphasized on the importance of building subculture that enables individuals to choose the things they should do such as what to value and how to think. He also indicated that building subculture should not mean that an individual disregard all the rule of the society rather than choose only the important things to do. He also emphasized on the fact that everybody should work at creating his or her own culture. Creating culture according to Morrie should involve investing in human family, investing in people and building a little community for the loved ones.
