Movie: Pocahontas

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, I am delighted this day to share with you on the different themes in the movie-Pocahontas. Can you believe that people with different ideologies and opinions or worldview can unite and coexist with one another? Then, if you are pessimistic, you need to rise to the occasion and empty those imaginations since life has changed. History reminds us things that happened in the past, but if it is not well documented, may skew our imaginations by misrepresenting what actually existed before we were born.

Today, I am going to base my presentation on the Disney movie called Pocahontas. This is understood to mean that, movies provide us with information or themes that help us appreciate the past, present and the future. Furthermore, it helps in enhancing our ways of life as we try to relate with one another in this universe. Therefore, I will be arguing despite a number of flaws, the movie teaches many moral values to our youth and the society.

Briefly, today I will be commenting on struggles and ownership of land, moral lessons, and stereotypes among the American Indians as depicted in this movie.

First, in our co-existence we are sometimes stereotypical in our judgments. The movie demonstrates or projects the American Indians in a favorable manner while at the same time blaming them for being stereotypical. They view the British colonizer as being uncivilized. British sailors are viewed as being ignorant on the spiritual things when they view the culture of American Indians as being native.

Second is the issue of land ownership, which stems conflict between the American Indians and the British. British are seen as being greedy and whose motive is to steal gold and riches of the Indians. This is demonstrated through what British-Ratcliffe says, “I hereby claim this land and all its riches in the name of His Majesty, King James I, and do so name this settlement Jamestown” (Pocahontas, 1995). The Indians are however united and they commune with their spirits.

Third is the depiction of moral values. The movie helps to encourage young people to be honest, courageous and die for the truth. This is exhibited when; Pocahontas father wants to shoot a Britain-John. Pocahontas intervenes, “No! If you kill him, you’ll have to kill me too” (Pocahontas, 1995). This statement shows the concern and the courage that young people have which needs to be encouraged. In addition, children should respect spirits and always endeavor to do right things all the time.

In summary, in line with the movie-Pocahontas, I have explained the need for the society to embrace one another. Exploiting other people should not be encouraged as experienced in the movie. Furthermore, there is need for young generations to be courageous and grow up with moral values as those demonstrated by Pocahontas.

To finish, I must admit that I have enjoyed sharing with you on this topic. I hope you have as well enjoyed the presentation. I believe you have learned a lot. We need to accommodate different views because, we as human being have differences of opinions but we should provide good environment for positive co-existence and be able to inculcate good moral values into the coming generations as the movie has shown us.
