I. You are expected to identify the author’s thesis, that is, what he or she is trying to prove.
II. You are to evaluate how successful the author defends this thesis.
III. What evidence does the author employ to prove the argument?
IV. Are there weaknesses in his or her argument?
V. Does the author have any biases or prejudices?
VI. If so, do these biases or prejudices detract from the book?
VII. You should also comment upon the general value of the book: is the work thought provoking?
VIII. Is it well written?
