Answer Questions
Question 1b
Over the years, people have noticed that the prisons do not offer the rehabilitation needed for criminals but makes them worse. Locking up criminals in one environment does not encourage moral behavior. Additionally, incarceration leads to exposure to more inhuman behavior. It now clear that the role of the prisons is merely to lock them away, other than providing them with much needed change (Cole & Smith, 2010). Corporal punishment, on the other hand, is viewed as harsh and inhuman. However, the effects of imprisonment do not compare to the damage that can be caused by corporal punishment (Murtagh, 2012).
Incarceration leads to the exclusion from social life, family, children and marriages. Excluding an individual from the basic necessities in life drives them to the edge. The bad environment that they are exposed to in prisons breaks them. In prisons, people meet more experienced thieves, join gangs; abuse drugs, and face depression. The purpose of imprisonment is to ensure that criminals learn how to survive on the outside world without committing crimes. However, in prison criminals advance their crime skills and end up committing bigger crimes after they serve their sentence. Notably, Murtagh (2012) realized that more than half convicts end up back to prison because they can no longer identify with moral human behavior.
The effectiveness of corporal punishment was proved by the slave trade. Masters punished their slaves for bad behavior and disobedience. In this way, they were able to control them while making sure they remained useful to them. Although corporal punishment was abolished when people gained their equal social status, states that practiced corporal punishment enjoyed low crime rates. It is wrong to impose corporal punishment because it reminds people of the old slave days and lower social class. However, crime rates have escalated because corporal punishment has been completely abolished (Cole & Smith, 2010).
Question 2a
Rogerian technique is effective in this because both parties will get their share of the solution. Attacking people directly using the classical style may cause a disagreement even where it does not exist. Therefore, Rogerian method is more effective in handling this matter.
US immigration has been a contentious issue for decades. Some of us feel that immigration should be limited in order to control certain demographic factors. However, the solution may be discussing this issue to depth and highlighting the repercussions of taking such a move. It is agreeable that immigration has been problematic for the US. While in the other hand, the nation has experienced its rich civilization and culture being shaped out by hardworking, ambitious, and people with exclusive talents across the world (Guskin & Wilson, 2007).
However, enforcement-focused methods for stemming illegal immigration and denial of services to the poverty-stricken are inhumane, and contribute to larger social problems in the US. These problems include the following: detainees living in prisonlike conditions, detainees being abused in and dying in detention facilities, children not receiving education, healthcare, or food; families torn apart, often pushed into poverty and instability, children ending up in single parent households or foster care (Haugen & Musser, (2011).
They do not also consider the reasons why people migrate illegally to the United States, making enforcement and/or denial measures temporary fixes at best (until the next loophole is discovered and exploited). Therefore, while illegal immigration pose a security threat to the US and should be addressed, more humane and realistic ways to stem the flow of illegal immigrants are necessary. For policies to be effective towards their goal without causing further pain and suffering to some of the world’s most vulnerable people, the matter should be handled humanely (Haugen & Musser, (2011).
Question 3b
A few years ago, the American health care system was faced by a number of new challenges. The numbers of uncovered Americans was on the rise, but this time because of bankruptcy and the stability of the financial system and macro economy continue to be threatened by foreclosure. Too much burden had been shifted to the working population, by employers, whose rates of income grown were not rapid enough to accommodate such changes.
The President Obama’s administration is planning to make denial of coverage by insurance companies because of pre-existing conditions illegal. It plans to place limits the amount one can be charged for pocket-out-expenses. Insurance companies will be requires to provide cover for preventive care and routine checkups, like colonoscopies and mammograms. This approach plans not only to save lives, but also to save money. The Americans with insurance cover can expect more stability and security from this plan. The plan aims to provide quality, affordable choices for the tens of millions uncovered Americans.
The plan intends to create new insurance exchange, where small businesses and individuals will have the capacity to shop for health insurance, which will be provided in competitive prices. Insurance companies will be provided by the move more incentives to participate in the proposed exchange, since they will be able to compete for new customers. Customer will have greater leverage for bargaining with insurance firms for quality coverage at better prices. This will enable government and large companies’ employees’ access affordable insurance cover (Moran, 2012).
