Religion Project

For this assignment you will be required to watch a movie in class, and then based on your understanding of the religious symbols and ideas used in the story line, deconstruct it. Good questions to ask yourselves as you watch the film are: What major world religions, if any, have influenced the story line? How do the characters in the movie exemplify religious and/or philosophical principles?

What are some of the religious symbols used? How is myth used, or is it? Are there themes of redemption present?

Are there rituals, or mind/body techniques present in the characters lives (e.g., meditation, yoga, prayer, etc.)? Does the idea of dualism factor into the story? Also feel free to use the other two movies from the Matrix Trilogy for the project.

The presentation should be a minimum of 20 PowerPoint slides.

It should be a loosely “academic” sort of presentation, in which you research ideas found in the movie, and compare them to at least three of the religions that we have discussed this semester. It should concentrate on mythic, religious, “historical”, and iconographic ideas found in the movie, all of which should then be related to the religions you have chosen.

Ultimately, be creative, think, and have fun – that is why we are in this class – all the while being sure to communicate the main points of your understanding of the religious significance (or lack thereof) of the movie.

Each Presentation needs to cite at least 5 outside sources. Three of these sources must come from books or journals other than your textbooks. A maximum of two sources can come from the Internet. Journal articles found on the web do not count towards the two-source maximum.
