What Generation Y Wants
The fickle generation cares. Its just not about the things their parents used to care about.

GENERATION Y has been called many names since the eldest of the group entered the job market about a decade ago.

Their Generation X managers call them Generation Entitlement because they are not afraid of asking for help and speaking up when they feel short-changed. Their Baby Boomer bosses call them Generation Strawberry due to their easily bruised egos and apparent aversion to hardship and conflict.

Despite countless generalisations, the Generation Y is perhaps the most difficult to describe in broad strokes because they operate in extremes. They have short attention spans, but they can spend notoriously long hours on their pet project. They would willingly spend thousands of dollars on an item they really want, and skimp on the rest including their meals.

These dichotomies have had many marketers and employers searching for the elusive sweet spot for the young. It is rather difficult for the Gen X and Baby Boomers to understand the Gen Y, says Daryl Wong, a corporate trainer who works with employers and their Generation Y employees. That is why I always tell them that they are living in the Gen Ys world, not the other way around, he adds.

When it comes to what Generation Y wants from products, services and their jobs, Wong says two of the most important things are sincerity and honesty because the well-informed millennial can smell a phoney from a mile away.

They appreciate honesty, Wong says, adding that it is better for managers and manufacturers to own up to their mistakes instead of covering it up.

However, as a rather demanding lot, they also have a list of other characteristics they look for in work, life, and the things they use. The following, Wong reveals, are some of them.
