Rhetorical analysis

Thesis statement:

Desperate Housewives has depicted the various critical categories such as race, gender, sexuality and social standing through its characters, setting and the plot. In the story, we get to see women treated like sexual beings, there to only please men. The scenes depict gender roles while sexuality has been viewed to cause marriages breakups and incidences of infidelity to increase. Race is also a sensitive issue that needs to be addressed because it causes conflict in the society. Nonetheless, class is a common factor that should be embraced.

Introduction and Episode Summary

Desperate housewives” is an American TV show created by Merc Cherry and produced by Cherry productions and ABC Studios. The show is set in Wisteria Lane which is a fictional suburban American town based in Fairview in Eagle State which is also fictional. It is chiefly meant to reach out to married couples, engaged couples and those that are dating. The purpose of this show is to show people what their society has become and how married people should and should not behave so as to keep their marriages intact.

Color in the show Desperate Housewives has been shown to portray a light and serene environment where people seem to live a happy life with no worries at all but this is not true in the real sense as everyone in Wisteria Lane have multiple problems of their own. The producers of the show have clearly mastered the art of music in the show by portraying different types of music for every occasion. They for example they set a sad background tune during the funeral of Alice and clearly incorporated suitable music when Eddie’s house was on fire. This makes the show seem lively, fun to watch and easy to concentrate. The directors made sure that the episode does not last for too long so that it does not get boring to the audience. This has made sure that the pace of the show is well and suitable.

Rhetorical analysis: Desperate Housewives

Race, class and sexuality are the main critical categories exhibited by characters and the storyline of the show. Desperate Housewives in both casting and directing has indirectly illustrated a certain degree of racism. This is can be easily noted from the dominance of white people as the cast on the show. Majority of the cast in the show are Caucasian except for Gabby and Carlos Solis who are Hispanic. The aspect of race within the show is somewhat realistic because it is uncommon to find an African American family in a residence such as Wisteria Lane

Racism is a sensitive issue, and its presence in the show, would lead to poor ratings. Regardless, the depictions of racism as previously cited are indirect. It is thus crucial to illustrate that it is a harmful aspect that the director and producers need to address before major criticism contributes to the failure of the show.

Social standing is a one of the critical categories of this assignment that has been depicted throughout the show. Wisteria lane is a posh estate with people driving classy cars. Gabriella is a young former model, who within her career developed a taste for a rich lifestyle and rich men. Her husband Carlos Solis is a wealthy and successful businessperson who makes a seven-figure annual salary. In one of the scenes of the show, he is quoted saying that he made over 200,000 dollars in one business venture the previous year. Solis also advices Gabby to show off her $15,000 necklace that he bought her.

The depiction of class is therefore realistic. The posh lifestyle that people of Wisteria live is only natural because most of the people are wealthy and are able to support this kind of lifestyle. This is not harmful in any way because no one is hurt by this kind of lavish living.

Sexuality as a critical category is depicted by Eddie Britt who has the desire to sleep with Mike Delfino while at the same time is involved with other men. From scenes of the show, we see that Eddie has an affair with her plumber, her tennis coach and a priest. Gabby is portrayed as a sexual predator when she makes moves on her gardener John. . Another category addressed in the show is Gender. Women are forced to leave their jobs and dedicate their time fully to taking care of the kids. Lynette decided to leave her career, stay at home and raise kids. She is forced to take care of her for kids while her husband is away on business. We get to see that she is forced to leave the funeral of her friend early when her children decide to misbehave and head to the swimming pool. She is forced to go and take them out by force.  Retrieved from http//t1.gstatic.com/images on 29th 0ctober 2012.

Bree is a stay at home mum who does every household chore in the house. She prepares dinner for her family and serves them too. Male chauvinism should be eradicated from the society. This depiction is harmful in the sense that it portrays women as helpless beings who are not able to work and support themselves. Men should be able to encourage their wives to work and earn income.

Conclusion

Scenes from the show clearly portray the society as it is. The media has been at the forefront in showing how wealthy people spend their money and show off their class. There are shows in television depicting how musicians earn and spend their money. Billionaires are publicized on television with their posh cars, mansions and private jets. Producers and writers present characters and situations on film in such a way that we can compare and contrast the scenes with the society we live in. this helps us address the major issues facing the society.

The author analyses the society that we live in and tries to put it into play by creating the show so that we can clearly see why negative vices such as murder and infidelity occur in our society. The TV show affects us in ways that we view the society that we live in and picture what happens around us. It is common to find women with the same characters such as those Gabby portrays which include infidelity and getting married only for financial gains. Hypocrisy is a major issue portrayed in the show where the characters try to fool their friends that they are leading a happy family life while in the real sense they all have troubles of their own. They try to cover these problems by portraying a happy face and trying to conceal their unhappiness whenever they are around other people.
