The Golden Dawn: Fascism in a time of Crisis

Introduction

Golden Dawn is an extreme and famous nationalist party in Greece. The party has attracted attention in the global world with its propensity for hate speech, violence, and racism. For the past years, the party’s politics have been marked as anti-religion, anti-Semitic, anti-Turk, and brutal to immigrants. The party was established in 1980 by Nikolaos Michaloliakos and since then, it has increased its members gradually. Since its establishment, the party has created contentious issues since many believe that the supporters do not value or respect human rights. Despite the founder convincing the public that his party is crucial in enhancing equality and social justice, it has gone against the laws in Greece. Political experts assert that, the golden dawn has not respected the laws in Greece in that; many members have embraced hate speech[1]. Most members have demonstrated that they would do or say anything to obtain what they want.

Case Study Topic Summary

The rise or popularity of Golden Dawn has created insecurity in Greece since the party does not abide to laws and principles that govern human kind. For the past years, the party has gained popularity in evading taxes, driving illegally, tolerating corruption, racism, hate speech, and violence. Despite some people believing that the party promotes injustice in Greece, the supporters believe that the party is crucial since it openly express its views and opinions about the government. Golden Dawn’s members believe that Greece has not fully considered and respected human rights. The party gained popularity in 2011 and 2012 when it took advantage of the people that disregarded the governing parties and political system of Greece. During that era, most people demonstrated in the street to attack the corrupt MPs. The Golden Dawn’s members offered what the nation wanted to hear. However, the group has been careful not to attack or harass some people or races. For instance, the party does not attack Neo-Nazis who led the country into crisis such as Hitler or notable corrupt businessmen.

In essence, Golden dawn has been known for its protests against immigration. Golden Dawn supporters have demonstrated, attacked, and intimidated foreigners.  The Greece’s government is working hard to silence or shut down the party. Despite the party gaining popularity in 2011 and 2012, Nikolaos has been accused of running a criminal party that supports racism, hate speech, and violence. The founder has been accused of establishing a Neo-Nazi party that promotes injustice in the community. Despite the Greece’s government working hard to ban the party, the majority of its members believe that Golden Dawn has the best leadership. For them, the party has strong people with ideas and good behaviors. Golden Dawn members’ language and behavior is questionable especially when demonstrating in the street. The members believe that all immigrants are subhuman and thus, the government of Greece should remove such people. With this, most people criticized the group for instigating violence, racism, and hate speech.

Most researchers, academic sources, and media describe the Golden Dawn as a Neo-Nazi party. Although its supporters deny that the party has connection with Neo-Nazism, most of its doctrines and principles are similar to that of Loannis Metaxas who established the fascist dictatorship between 1930s and 1940s.  Additionally, the party has been criticized for publishing articles that support dictatorship. For instance, in 1987 published an article that regarded Adolf Hitler as a great military genuine and social reformer[2]. The media has criticized the party since it used bold letters and capital letters on their article published in 1987, to reveal their passion on Hitler’s leadership.  Occasionally, the party has appeared to respect and salute Nazi. Supporters of Golden Dawn party have been accused of violence and humiliating the ethnic minorities and immigrants.

Major issues

Although Golden Dawn party has been criticized across the globe, its members have declared their interest in running the next election.  The party vows to run in the next election despite the challenges it has faced all over the world. In essence, Golden Dawn’s founder and some lawmakers are imprisoned due to the allegation made that the party is a criminal organization. Despite being criticized in the global world, the party’s supporters believe that they have what it takes to win the next election. The party has encouraged its supporters to participate in the election and reveal their interest on choosing members of Golden Dawn party. Although the Greece’s government is working hard to ban the party, the supporters of Golden Dawn believe that the challenges they have encountered have made the party more powerful and stronger. With this, the followers believe that the public should support Golden Dawn party since it advocates for empowerment and justice in Greece. Ilias Kasidiaris, a prominent public figure in the party told the public that the party would be participating in the next election[3]. The opinion pools accounted in 2014 reveal that, the party would get 8 to 10.4% if the elections were conducted now. In brief, Kasidiaris intends to run for Athens mayor in May. Kasidiaris believes that he would transform and enhance the recommended change in Athens if given the opportunity to serve as a mayor. Additionally, he believes that the party cannot corrupts or die regardless of the challenges it face. In his speech, Kasidiaris stated that, the party is more powerful, united, and stronger despite putting prominent leaders of the party to Jail[4].

Although the party declares its interest in running in the next election, some people believe that the party may not bring the change they claim to do. In 2012, the party entered in parliament for the first time and advocated against illegal immigrants and corrupt politicians who brought the economic crisis. As previously mentioned, the party increased its popularity during this era as many people desired to attack the corrupt government. Despite gaining its popularity, the party has been criticized of promoting violence and supporting dictatorship style of leadership. Historically, Hitler was criticized of being inhuman and brutal to his people. Despite many criticizing Hitler’s leadership, the Golden Dawn party has revealed their passion and interests in Hitler’s leadership. With this, the Greece’s government is looking for ways to stop the party. However, after a thorough consideration of what should be done, the Greece’s government has resisted their desire to ban the party since this would require them to amend the constitution. It is paramount to note that, every party has the right to participate in the election in Greece. Therefore, it becomes difficult to restrict the party from running in the next election.

Following the murder of a hip-hop musician Pavlos Fyssas by the supporter of the Golden Dawn, the government established the need to arrest the top leaders of the party such as Nikolaos Michaloliakos, four MPs and over 20 members. Now, the supporters of Golden Dawn believe that Greece’s government is not valuing and respecting the party’s interests, standards, and principles. The party’s supporters believe that Greece would only prosper if it was to embrace the values and doctrines implemented by the Golden dawn.

A review of Pro and Con views on the issue

In response to the discussed issues, Greece would have a chance to control and ban Golden Dawn from participating in the next election. This would be easy because most of its prominent leaders and members are in jail. Although it may be difficult to ban the party from running into the next election, the image posed by the party would cause the public not to value, trust, and respect its leadership. By imposing a life sentence to the Golden Dawn’s prominent leaders and members, a nation would have a chance to promote peace, justice, equality, and unity to all people. Specifically, the nation would create great insights on the importance of respecting all people regardless of the differences that emerge in culture, education, race, and social status. However, attacking the golden party would cause major conflicts in the nation[5]. The party may demonstrate in the street and increase violence. With this, the government must embrace ways of handling the issue in an intelligent way without attacking the party.

My position on the issues

In my opinion, the party should not be allowed to run in the election despite the fact it is a democracy. The fact that the party is a large group that entices prejudice views and racism, then this party would infringe or impede human rights. Allowing the party to run for the next election would increase violence, hate speech, and racism. Still, giving the party a chance to govern the nation would pose a security concern. With this, the Greece’s government should not allow the party to run in the next election. The government should educate the public on the importance of choosing parties that advocate for equality, social justice, and harmony. It should also ensure that freedom of speech does not impede or infringe human rights.

Conclusion

Overwhelmingly, this paper has provided a comprehensive analysis of the Golden Dawn. In brief, the essay has provided the historical background of the party.  Nikolaos is a potent illustration of a leader who would do anything to fight for his party. Despite being jailed and accused of establishing a criminal organization, his interest and passion for the party is dubious. Since its establishment, the world has criticized the party for its views on human rights. Specifically, many people criticize the party for its support on violence, hate speech, and racism. Despite convincing the public that the party is not Neo- Nazis, the standards and principles of the party reveal that the party rejects human rights. As discussed in this pamphlet, the party has been criticized for supporting leaders such as Hitler in their publication. The party has demonstrated its interest of clearing all foreigners in Greece. The party has infringed the Greece laws especially in utilizing hate speech in their protests. With this, the Greece’s government should not allow the party to run in the next election considering the party persuades violence and hate speech.
