All the If and but’s In it.Make sure you Read it once Thank you
This assignment requires you to select one document from the Jesuit Relations and Allied Documents, available online at HYPERLINK “http://puffin.creighton.edu/jesuit/relations/” http://puffin.creighton.edu/jesuit/relations/ . This collection, which spans over 200 years, was produced by Jesuit missionaries and represents an important perspective through which to view the early encounters between Aboriginal people in what would become Canada and Europeans. Your task is to produce a 5 page, 1,250 word essay on the document you select, discussing their content as it relates to themes covered in the course in the lectures of weeks one and two.
PLEASE ENSURE THAT THE DOCUMENT YOU SELECT INCLUDES ENOUGH COMMENTARY ON ABORIGINAL PEOPLE AND CULTURES UPON WHICH TO BASE YOUR ANALYSIS. For instance, some of the documents are centered heavily on missionary travels, and do not explore Indigenous cultures extensively enough to build your analysis. Using a volume which includes an Aboriginal name, for instance, may help you refine your search more easily.
Question:
Your essay should answer the following question:
WHAT ARE THE ATTITUDES AND PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS HELD BY FRENCH MISSIONARIES ABOUT INDIGENOUS SOCIETIES ENCAPSULATED IN THE SELECTED DOCUMENT? HOW DID THESE ATTITUDES, VALUES AND STEREOTYPES SERVE TO JUSTIFY THE MISSION IN NORTH AMERICA?
Layout:
Your essay should include:
A separate title page listing the course number, assignment name (“Primary Document Analysis”), a title, your name and student number, my name (Submitted to), and the date.
An introduction of no more half of a double-spaced page, with a clear and arguable thesis statement and the identification of 2-3 themes discussed in your documents.
A brief description of the documents you have selected of no more than 500 words. You may also choose to describe the documents as you address each theme.
Analysis of no less than 500 words, addressing the themes you have identified in the introduction.
A conclusion of no more than half a double-spaced page, summarizing your main points and thesis statement and bringing your paper, and its argument, to a logical conclusion.
SOURCES: No other sources beyond documents themselves are required, but you may choose to refer to your textbook, articles or to lecture notes for supporting information. You may also refer to any films used in the course. Lecture notes and the textbook do not need to be cited for this particular assignment. You must, however, cite the Jesuit Relations documents, films and articles in proper format (footnotes) and according to the Chicago Manual of Style, examples of which are available online or in the recommended text for the course. For this assignment, NO FORMAL BIBLIOGRAPHY IS REQUIRED.
A few notes:
Do not use “I” statements. This is a formal historical analysis, meaning that you must argue based on what the DOCUMENTS reveal, not based on what you think.
Avoid VALUE statements. You will read statements by missionaries that are racist, yes, but this is not an actual argument. You may rephrase it to talk about the notion of teleology based on race, or of Old World perspectives, but do not argue that your document demonstrates racism. This is a given.
Ensure you have an argument. Any essay submitted with no discernible argument will be graded accordingly, and, depending on the circumstances, may be returned to you for a rewrite. Any questions regarding your argument should be directed far in advance to the instructor for clarification and assistance.
