Step One: The Annotated Bibliography

Description: You will produce an annotated bibliography of possible sources for your research argument. You will cite and annotate a list of possible sources for your Literature Review

Invention: Your task here is to identify potential sources for your research topic and to explain, briefly, what the source is, what it does, and how it could be valuable for your research (does it provide background, does it prove the thesis etc.). This annotation should take the form of a paragraph 150-250 words in length for each entry on your annotated bibliography. These ten sources should demonstrate variety in content, style and medium. While web sources may be included, they should not make up the majority of your research materials. At least 4 sources must be scholarly. Of course, basic reference sites should not be included in this bibliography.
*One of these sources must be a mode of primary research (observation, interview, or survey). This source will be set up by the student and explained but does not need to be performed. Any survey questions, interview questions/prep must be turned in as an appendix.

Composition: Locate ten sources that could solve the problem/address the issue introduced in Research Inquiry. Using the examples provided, produce an annotated bibliography of these sources. Each bibliographic entry should include the source citation information in MLA or APA format and 150-250 word annotation. Your audience for this project is primarily yourselves, your classmates, and your instructor, as the annotated bib here is being used primarily as an invention device.

Evaluation: Your work here will be evaluated according to the following considerations.

-Does the writer provide accurate MLA or APA-style citation information for each source?
-Does the writer explain the kind of source he or she is citing?
-Does the writer explain the argument or discussion of each cited source?
-Does the writer explain the value or relevance of the cited source to the research problem?
-Does the writer provide annotated bibliographic entries for ten potential sources that demonstrate variety in content, style, and medium?

Step Two: Thesis & Literature Review

Building upon your 10 annotated sources, you will propose a working thesis (or solution), and create a literature review. In conducting your research and reviewing these 10 sources, indicate how your research question fills a gap and fits into the research in your field. This writing should be approximately 4-6 pages.

Intro:
• Define the topic/problem, providing an appropriate context for reviewing the literature
• Establish reasoning for the topic (why is this of interest/why is it important?)
• Explain/preview the organization of the review

Body Paragraphs:
• Move from the background info and general view of the research to the specific problem/working thesis
• Group the literature according to common themes/perspectives
• Point out any major flaws, or gaps in research
• Discuss how the “hypothetical” source fills a gap
• Outline issues pertinent to future study/solution
• Demonstrate how the accumulated sources work to prove your thesis

Conclusion:
• Summarize major contributions of the literature and conclusions from research
Reminders on a Literature Review:

• It is not a descriptive list or summary of the information gathered
• The review must be defined by a guiding concept (your working thesis)
• Your purpose is to convey to the reader what knowledge and ideas have been established on a topic and how they work together to support your proposed thesis.
• Organize sources gathered into sections that present related themes or positions on the topic.
 Synthesize and evaluate the literature according to your topic/working thesis
 Simply repeating Annotations will not work!

-Ultimately, though, these ten sources should be discussed in a fashion that allows you to demonstrate a working thesis that serves to solve your research problem. What is the state of research on this topic, how do all these accumulated sources support your argument (thesis), and serve to provide a solution or plan of action for your research problem?
