One of the goals of the ethnography of communication is to uncover the “rules of speaking” in different cultures. Both Keenan’s and Basso’s studies are excellent examples of the kind of research conducted by ethnographers of communication. Keenan’s study focuses on the rules of speaking in a hamlet in southern Madagascar. Basso’s study examines the circumstances under which, as well as the reasons why, the Western Apache of east-central Arizona may remain silent.
Answer the following 3 questions in a two pages essay.
1. What rules of speaking in these two cultures are similar to those in “mainstream” American culture (or the ones you are used to)?
2. What rules of speaking in these two cultures are different from those in “mainstream” American culture (or the ones you are used to)?
3. Most importantly, how does research like Keenan’s and Basso’s help us understand and avoid intercultural miscommunication?
