Gender Issues in Communication: Education Setting

Gender Issues in Communication: Education Setting

Overall, effective communication helps people to understand each other better. Therefore, enable people to build trust, respect, and solve indifferences. Simple misunderstanding arising from communication style, work attitude, cultural differences create huge challenges. Gender communication usually affects social cohesion in most working places and learning institutions. Ideally, gender communication issues include sexual harassment, opportunities, perceptions and communication style. Therefore, there is the need to understand how men and women communicate to abide effectively by the invisible rules, which promote the communication process. This research would explain the principles, application, and significance of gender issues in information especially in education setting.

Principles of Gender Issues in Communication

Ideally, communication barriers distort the information, which results to failures. The communication processes ought to consider gender and intended purpose of the information. Therefore, it is important for the “sender to be gender sensitive” to deliver information especially in education setting (Baker and Alexander 365). First, the teacher would ensure full representation of both men and women. That is, there is equal treatment of both the men and women students. Moreover, the curriculum should ensure that females take the role of men, thereby destroying the gender norms and stereotype. This would positively affect the information because both male and female are equally represented. Secondly, the educators should use language, which avoid biasness. For example, MacPhail asserts that it is wrong to say, “Social good summit attendees and their wives are invited” (210). The use of “wives” is gender bias; instead, it is important to use the word “partner.” Gender sensitivity enhances the communication process because both men and women feel represented. Thirdly, the educator ought to avoid exclusionary forms. For example, the educator’s language should indicate the use of “he/she” or “they.” Ideally, the speaker should avoid the use of “exclusive pronouns when lecturing mixed audience” (Giri 256). Lastly, the education curriculum and educators should promote gender equity through proper names, labels, and titles. For example, the speaker should promote the use of professional language such as “actor instead of actress.” This would avoid the perception that women are less important individuals.

Application of Gender Issues in Communication

Generally, in education setting, boys and girls differ in many aspects. Research found that boys underperform due to the “feeling of superiority compared to girls” (Bourdillon 62). Therefore, teachers should practice communication that eliminate the stereotype and improve equality. Many professionals have applied the principles in creating positive interpersonal relationship between boys and girls in school. For example, both girls and boys could play together without segregation. Baker and Alexander pointed that, “men communicate primarily through status while women communicate through human connection” (370) Therefore, understanding gender issues in communication has helped to solve social diversity in the society today. For example, in the United States, many people believe in the stereotype that hinders integration. However, the educationists have applied this skill to promote cultural fusion in education centers. The administration allows students to interact freely during free time and share cultural uniqueness. Moreover, the skills have been applied in settling conflicts between girls and boys within learning institution. Although, it is difficult to change the society, boys and girls have been taught how they should understand sex in the society. Therefore, alterations of negative taught eliminated negative thoughts about “gender disparity and sex” (Phillips 310). For example, boys are taught to respect women and understand them as sisters and not sex objects.

Importance of Gender Issues in Communication

Overall, people face challenges everyday due to lack of effective communication and gender insensitivity. The focus on gender issues has forced the society to change rapidly. That is, the society has changes “its approach, values and free discussion about issues” related to women and men (Bourdillo 278). Education plays a crucial role in achieving the goals. For example, organizations such as UNDP involve both male and female when presenting its official press, publication, statement, and messages. As such, both male and female feel part of the organization. Additionally, the society has empowered women through education such that women could access to more opportunities. Giri purported that, lack of adequate information about gender issues “led to segregation of professional work” despite the women attaining higher education and skills (288). However, the application of proper communication style, the many culture values gender roles. For example, women are considered for political and leadership positions. The change in gender role and self-perception boosts morale and improve successful life. The social interaction and communication enable people to settle the conflict thereby promoting harmony and peace. The communication has improved positive attitude, which develop friendly education environment. Moreover, students are able to appreciate each other’s success and failures. Currently, gender sensitive information has led to the achievement of “key sustainable development” is education institutions (Phillips 317). This is because understanding gender issues eliminate conditional oppression such as sex harassment and ethnicity. The administration gets enough time to concentrate in education agenda that promote the achievement of sustainable development. The better understanding of gender issues among students help the educators to collaborate in planning of agendas and facilitate analysis process.

Ideally, principles of effective communication enable people to follow certain process during message delivery. The understanding of gender issues has facilitated the initiation of communication styles, which promote social cohesion. Research has revealed that women are considered for political and leadership positions and granted equal opportunity in education. The change of attitude and perception enhances sustainable development.
