How Best to Ready Oneself for an Interview

How Best to Ready Oneself for an Interview

Introduction

Interviews can and have proven to be a tricky affair. It is one thing to be qualified, yet completely another to sell oneself in a manner that proves one’s capabilities. More often, people have the qualifications and skills required for a particular job. Yet, their inability to express themselves properly results to selling oneself short. As a result, they end up losing out on an opportunity. This discussion briefly looks at the best way that one can prepare themselves for an interview.

Research

This is one of the most crucial steps that are done before attending an interview. When one receives an invitation for an interview, they are required to familiarize themselves with the organization. One needs to know the activities of the organization, including their services and products. A background research also helps one understand the vision and mission of the organization (Cosentino, 2010). It is then that an applicant can establish how their personal goals are aligned to the vision and mission of the company. A background research is also an indication of a keen interest in the company. When an applicant does not carry out a background research, the impression created is that of lack of interest.

Preparation

Preparation is very general as research of the organization also falls within the preparation aspect. In preparation, a candidate must think about the possible questions they are likely to be asked during the interviews. There are some common interview questions such as a general description of oneself. Mock interviews always go a long way in ensuring that one has the right answer to the questions asked (Cosentino, 2010). A candidate must take time to know the manner in which they would want to answer particular question. This helps to avoid a candidate from contradicting themselves which could significantly reduce their chances of getting a job.

Another aspect of the preparation is to understand ones’ skills and abilities. This is question that is often asked by potential employers. One must understand exactly what they are good at. They must also understand the goals of the organization and the alignment of one’s skills with the goals. An organization that is seeking to hire will always want to know how the skills of the candidate will be of benefit to the organization (Cosentino, 2010). It is therefore crucial that a person understands what skills they possess and how they will help bring out the mission and vision of the company.

It is also important for the candidate to think about their strengths. More often, people go about life without taking time to find out what they are excellent at. It is the identification of the strong areas that could make the difference between one getting a job or missing the opportunity.

Conclusion

Most of the people who miss out on job opportunities during interviews do so for their inability to sell their worth properly. It is correct to assume that by the time a candidate has been shortlisted for the interview, they have the basic requirements needed for a position. Yet, it is how well one can sell their abilities that determine whether or not they will get the job. The bottom line in making oneself ready for an interview is to prepare. Lack of preparation can make even the most qualified person fail to clinch a most deserved position.
