Hunger in DaytonOhio
ATTENTION
- Attention-Getter: reports indicate that almost two hundred thousand children in Ohio are on the brink of hunger, Ohio remains one of the top states where children under five years old experience food insecurity (Bischoff, 2009).
- Topic Reveal: improving the economic situation in the country is the best way to fight hunger
- Audience Connection: hunger affects all the segments of the society. It affects the children, teenagers, employed adults and the elderly. The economy has declined and this means that even people who used to receive a middle-income salary are affected. You fall into this category, and with the declining economy, it is likely that some of you will not get jobs when you finish school.
- Credibility Statement: I have researched the topic thoroughly using different sources of information. I have analyzed the methods used by charitable and non-governmental organizations in America and around the world.
- Preview Main Points: I will first examine the hunger problem in Ohio and then look at the various measures taken by individuals to handle the problem. I will then propose the best alternative of dealing with the problem.
NEED
- Sub-point: hunger is a real problem in Ohio
- I. Many children under five years old are food insecure, meaning that they do not have access to nutritious food.
- II. Ohio is among the top states where children under the age of eighteen years face hunger
- III. More than two hundred thousand people in Ohio receive emergency food assistance
- I. Most of the people who receive emergency food aid are from low income families
- II. One in three people in Ohio do not earn enough money for necessities such as food, housing and healthcare
- Sub-point: many low income families in Ohio are hungry
TRANSITION: so, how can the sate of Ohio resolve its hunger problem?
SATISFACTION
- Sub-point: I suggest that the government should aim at improving the people’s economic situation
- I. The government should consider increasing the minimum wage so that families will be able to afford enough to buy nutritious food
- II. The government and non-governmental sectors should aim at increasing the number of job opportunities available to ensure that many people are employed
- I. Most families spend a lot of money paying for the high cost of housing that they do not have enough money left for food (Halt 47)
- II. Children from low-income families are more likely to get health problems and thus a lot of money is spent paying healthcare bills (Halt 59)
- Sub-point: I suggest that the government should make efforts to reduce the cost of housing and health care
3. Sub-point: I suggest that the government should improve the school feeding program. The government should consider introducing meal plans in schools, where it will provide at least two meals for children.
TRANSITION: why are the suggested proposals the best solutions?
VISUALISATION
- The idea of introducing more effective meal plans in schools will mean that the government will increase the budget allocation.
- I. This will make sure that the children eat meals that are more nutritious, and it will in turn reduce their chances of getting sick.
- II. When children are fed in schools, the other family members will have more food to eat at home.
- III. Children who are well fed concentrate more in class (Berg 2011). they have better brain development, and they develop better socially and physically (Neeley, 2011)
- Improving the economic situation will mean that families will have more dispensable income. The families will thus be able to meet most, if not all, of their expenses.
- Reducing the high cost of housing and healthcare is important as it will increase the money available for families to buy more food
ACTION
- Summarize Main Points: it is clear that there is a hunger problem in Ohio. Many families, especially those that are low income, are not able to cater for their necessities.
- Restate Thesis: it is clear that improving the economic situation of parents is the best way of dealing with the hunger problem in the country
- Call to Action: as students, you have the power to influence the government. This is a chance for all the concerned students present to make a change in the society, by pressing the local authority to take a more pro-active measure to deal with the hunger problem.
