I did an interview on Asharah. Asharah is a performer of cabaret and tribal belly dancing. On the interview, I asked her various questions about herself, belly dancing and her skills in the dance. She seeks to raise artistic and professional standards of belly dancing. Asharah has taught belly dancing in various countries. These include United States, Europe, Asia and Canada. She has also produced a DVD with instructions on belly dancing. The 2008 DVD she says, is one of the best DVDs of instructions on belly dancing. The DVD is suitable for all belly dancers, of any level and style.
She has certificates in the Suhaila Salimpour Format and Jamila Salimpour Format, level 3 and level 1 respectively. She also has a B.A in Near Eastern Studies from the University of Princeton. She teaches dancers about the evolution of belly dance and the Middle East culture and history. She also wants to bring out a dancer’s individuality in dancing and help the dancer to be creative. She lived in the East Coast for twelve years and then moved to San Francisco Bay Area. She usually dances with the Bhoomi project of Zoe Jakes.
On the interview, she said that she is proud of her far she has come and of her success. This she says is through friends and other people who appreciated her art and helped her promote it. She has strived to be herself and unique in her style of dancing. Her style of belly dance is not limited to one genre and she always follows her intuition. Asharah dances singly and is not a member of any dance group. This she says is not easy, but she is proud of it. In order to succeed, she had to embrace her fears and frustrations. She worked hard to reach where she is and did not wait for an easy way out.
Her strategy is perfecting her technique, by putting her focus on training and taking care of her body, in order to perfect her style. In order to succeed, she also had to appreciate her progress and focus less on other people’s opportunities. Some of her achievements are production of a DVD for WorldDanceNewYork, teaching dance in Joy Motion, one of the biggest non-profit studios of dance in DC. Two years after joining Saffron Dance studio in Virginia, it won “Best Place to Work Out” and “Best New Business” awards in Arlington city.
She has also performed in also taught, performed and simply been part of events around the world and appeared in the first DVD of Gothic Belly dance by WorldDanceNewYork. In this, she is thankful to dancers, producers, artists and friends who have helped reach these achievements. She says the path to success is staying true to oneself and maintaining one’s identity. Her motto is to remain true to who she is, to learn more knowledge from other people and be an example to other dancers. On dance, she says that one has to remember to have fun.
One also has to be creative, refine their art, by going for classes, knowing the lyrics of the songs that you are dancing to and knowing more on rhythm. In learning the skill, one also has to be dedicated, make it a habit to dance for improvement and learn the methods of going about it.
