Online Education Research Informative Essay


Online education continues to raise eyebrows for various reasons. To students, it is an affordable and flexible way of getting the much-needed degree certificate. One can work and at the same time enroll for a degree course. However, there are reputational challenges on this wonderful innovation. This paper will look at three articles that try to illuminate light on the benefits as well as the challenges of online education.

The first article is titled Online Education: Impact on Job Seekers and Future Implementation. This was an interview by education Professor Peter Shea, which defined what online education is all about, and gave more insight on the future of online education. In addition, the writer evaluated the effect of online education on the job market, concerning employers and quality of graduates who get their degrees through online programs. Shea paints a pale picture of the rising unemployment rates, which is “tied to the influx of recent graduates into the job market, including those who received their degrees through online programs” (par. 1). One critical concern in this article is the reputational challenges of online curses, although employers might not know how the employee or job seeker got his education.

The second article is titled, Innovation Imperative; Change everything; Online Education as a Transformation of Change, by Clayton Christensen, a professor of Business Administration at Harvard. The articles speaks about online education and how it can change the education landscape from the traditional form of education to a more advanced, easy accessible and more convenient type of education that can suit many people who may  not have time to attend full time courses at the universities. The article compares online and traditional form of education and discusses what should be done to improve on online education. The more easy and dynamic approach of online education is compared to the traditional and inflexible system of traditional education. However, the author argues that face-to-face communication is not bound to suffer much as students “will be able to arrange for such experiences when it suits the job they need to get done” (Christensen, 2013, par. 15).

The third article was from titled “Online Education Offers Access and Affordability,” and was written by Kim Clark. The article talks about the improvement of online education that has prompted the huge enrollment. The article indicated that curse offered by various institutions have been made to be flexible, making it possible for as many students as possible to enroll. This includes older people and the working class who have little time to attend classes. Clark observes, “All of these new changes are drawing in students like Linda Summers, a 51-year-old corporate trainer in Canton, Ga., who wanted to beef up her résumé and skills but didn’t have the time to travel to a university campus” (par. 17). Therefore, online education has provided numerous opportunities to such categories of people who want to pursue education while working. Further, the article argues that online education provides for easy access of education materials and lectures, which give students enough time to complete their assignments. The open education database gives the lists of online universities, and ranks them according to their performance. Therefore, one can make better decision in choosing a good online university or college.


The articles give a wealth of information on online education. Online education, as noted by these articles, is very dynamic since it can adapt to changes and variables that include time and money. It not only saves time and money, but also is also convenient. As a result, more people are going for online education, as opposed to the conventional method of teaching and examination. However, the authors concur that reputational challenges are not based on facts, but mere speculation.
