Pablo Picasso’s The Tragedy

Pablo Picasso’s “The Tragedy”

Pablo Picasso’s painting “The tragedy” is a manifestation of how artistic painting can be used to convey message to people. The painting does not provide any title or data that the picture was drawn.  The use of color and especially blue is one thing that has interested and attracted my attention and my desire to know more about the painting, and what it depicts and communicates.

Every painting work carries a message, which is required to be transmitted to the third parties (Doyle 445). Many artists usually have a burning issue that affects society or issues experienced in our day to day living that they require passing to the public. The message may be intended to teach, warn, and trigger change of behaviors, or to illustrate a certain behavior that is manifested by the people. The subject matter of the painting is sadness (Doyle 445).  One is able to tell the somber mood through the expressions of the people in the painting.   The man, the wife and the child are worn out and look disturbed. Furthermore, the use of blue color in the whole pictures adds weight about theme of the people in the picture.  Styles vary from one artist to another. Styles adopted communicate a message. Pablo in his painting uses symbolism as his style. There are various elements of arts that are employed to create his visual effects. For instance, he uses the blue color and the long dresses on the people in picture to symbolize a somber mood. Furthermore, he uses color, shape and background, and texture to highlight somber moods. This stylistic artist helps the readers identify easily what message the painting is sending out. Additionally, principles of design are also employed. One of the design principles that come out clearly is the perspective and balance. Pablo employed three dimensions that make the painting look real. This design also helps make the painting appealing. The picture has used the available space proportionally and employed spacing appropriately.  From the pictures one can tell that this is a family that is going through a common problem. There is also some sense of unity and togetherness. The relationship that exits between the members is cordial.

There is connection between style and subject matter. The style employed was associated with the main ideas that the author was sending out. For instance, the style of symbolism resonated with the way the author projects his picture, which intended to demonstrate that they were in a tragedy.  The painting further resonates with the kind of art that was being practiced during the early 1900s (National Gallery of Art para. 1). The painting was made of woods and the technique used was coil.  The material used in expression of style and portrayal of the subject matter was wood. The whole painting was made up of pictures that were painted blue. This painting helps to communicate the message and has also helped to categorize the time period in which such styles were used by artists.

In conclusion, the painting by Pablo is a good example of a painting that played a crucial role in portraying how people lived in the early 1900s. The painter employed various styles such as painting, color, perspective and balance that helped to bring out the mood of somber and sadness. By painting the pictures in blue, the author helped to portray the situation and the context as sadness and somber.
