Renaissance Art
The work of art that catches my eyes is the painting image of man’s creation. This was painted by an artist known as Michelangelo who came up with paintings and sculptures that attracted many people. He had a talent of sculptor work, and he built many projects especially churches such as Sistine and he mostly used marble to decorate buildings. Michelangelo’s art reflects typical renaissance values and it makes us to understand the work of art. The painting shows God stretching his arm to pass on the spark of life from his finger to a naked man. This reminds me that I was created in the image and likeness of God (http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/michelangelo/michelangelo.creation.jpg).
An explanation of the values – influences, themes, techniques, subjects – characteristic of the period or style under study
Most of the renaissance art were valuable in all different field including political, social and religious areas. The renaissance art were valued because they portrayed human beauty and the pleasures of life (Johnson, 2005). The influences of renaissance art on development were recognized during the 15th century. Different religious believers were influenced by the renaissance art style especially the creation of man because it makes them to move closer to God. Many of the church symbols that represented different meanings in life of humanity were under the influence of this style.
During the renaissance art in Italy, the periods were characterized as Early, High and Modern renaissance period. The High Middle Ages was the period characterized by vault structures with sharp pointed ages. Many of the architecture were the influence from the earlier period but the structures were light and weightless. This is the period when Michelangelo constructed Sistine church and he painted inside the image portraying the creation of man.
Information about how the social, political, or religious history of the period influenced its art and artists
The social history of the period influenced its art and artists in a way that many artists such as Michelangelo’s work were mostly appreciated by people. This made other groups to admire his work hence many people in the late middle age started to construct buildings basing on Michelangelo’s work. A cultural movement spanned around the 14th and 17th century and this led to transformation of architecture (Woods, Richardson and Lymberopoulou, 2007). Many artists started coping Michelangelo’s ideas and it spread to other parts of Europe. The transformation of renaissance art traditionally became a bridge between the middle and the modern period.
The political history of the period influenced its art and artists in a way that many monarchies and political buildings were built basing on renaissance art style. Some monuments represented the symbol of political heroes or powerful military men and their great administration buildings based on renaissance art. Some politicians wanted to know whether the renaissance was a cultural advancement from the middle period. They saw that the art in the middle ages were of doubt and reminiscence for the classical period. For instance, the construction of parliament in Europe and other law courts had the foundation of renaissance art especially that of the High period (Charles and Metcalf, 2007).
The religious history of the period influenced its art and artists in a way that many of renaissance art had symbols that represented some religious meaning. The symbols had intended beliefs to humanity and certain values to religious believers. They were meant to give hope in lives of the believers or in other words explain the origin of the universe or life. Most of Michelangelo’s sculptors were adopted by cathedrals because they tended to derive particular laws and moral values to religious believers. Many churches were built with various symbols that were placed either inside or outside the churches (Nash, 2008).
Biographical information about the artist whose work is assigned or (in SLP assignments) chosen for reflection
The biographical information of the artist whose work is chosen for reflections is Michelangelo Buonarroti. He was born on March in 1475 in Caprese and he started his sculptor work when he was 17 years old. He was the greatest of all artists in the western art. He was an Italian sculptor, a painter and an architect and the same time a poet writer during the period of high renaissance. His work mostly reflected on biblical heroes such as David and was entirely committed to Catholic Church service. Michelangelo became actively after 1519 and his work was appreciated by many people globally. His techniques in artwork made him famous and most of the developments of Gothic period had buildings based on his techniques.
