Homelessness

According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, “nearly 700,000 Americans experience homelessness on any given night in the U.S.” (National Alliance to End Homelessness, 2014) Economic crisis circumstances such as loss of job, family discord, mental illness, disabilities, drug and alcohol abuse and other life-altering situations contribute to homelessness. Many individuals who are not in shelters are living one paycheck away from homelessness.

The transformational leadership theory would be the model I would use to effectively organize the community to respond to the lack of housing, unemployment, healthcare and the criminalization of the homeless. Transformational leaders influence greatness within a community. Can you imagine being in a group where someone took the “bull by its horns” to create a clear goal, was passionate about the idea and had the ability to infuse the group with energy? A transformational leader does just that. I want to be able to inspire change in those who will follow. It is important to motivate communities and government organizations to help provide resources to prevent and end homelessness. I want to guarantee the needs of the homeless are satisfied and their rights are protected. My leadership style will be energetic, passionate and enthusiastic. It is important for me to focus on the process of ending homelessness as well as individual efforts and contributions to the cause. The theory was originally introduced by James MacGregor Burns (Bass, 2008). He believed “leaders and followers made each other advance to a higher level of moral and motivation” (Bass, 2008). Public education, policy, grassroots organizing will be the means for change in the areas of economic justice and civil rights.

Trafficking is Cross-Cultural
The leadership theory that I selected to address the societal issue of human trafficking is Cross-Cultural Leadership. According Avolio and Weber (2009) this theory focuses on leadership across different cultures in part by the globalization of organizations (p. 438). Other theories they suggested include, Global Leadership, Comparative Leadership and E-Leadership, which could also be utilized (pp.438-440).

The purpose of selecting Cross-Cultural Leadership or any of these other theories is to expand a greater awareness the issue of human trafficking over a vas audience worldwide. According to the International Labour Office (as cited by Johnson, 2015), an estimated 20.9 million people are victims of human trafficking (p.1). Human trafficking has become a problem worldwide and needs cooperative leadership from multiple countries.

Since the advent of the technology and social media, the ability to communicate with other countries and cultures can be done in minutes and can provide a movement to create social change. Leadership from these cultures can provide addition knowledge and resources needed to bring about awareness, advocacy, and stronger legislation.
