Purpose of research
The purpose of this project will be to introduce a new method in rendering artwork which is called “Hybrids”. A hybrid is an attempt to synthesize two discreet elements—in this case partial pixelization with representational painting, in order to arrive at a fresher approach. Hybrids are of particular interest to this researcher as no previous study has been conducted, relative to this approach. The purpose of this research and project is to experiment with—and introduce– Hybrids as a valid method of painting, and to add this approach to the artistic canon.
The intended audience of this research and study will include professors, students, and researchers—of art and art history—who find interest in this new approach. Artists are also among the intended audience, particularly since they will be able to rest and validate Hybrids as a legitimate method of rendering subjects in paint.

The theoretical foundation of this approach likes in the phenomena of the “Gestalt Effect”. The Gestalt Effect posits that the human brain can generate forms and recognize visual figures, as a whole, instead of in its individual elements (which in the Hybrids are the pixels) (Carlson and Heth, 2010).
Paintings for this project will be limited to the grayscale (values ranging from black to white) to convey simplicity and allow the subject to “speak” to the viewer on the basis of shapes and forms, rather than through color. The value steps will serve as the tones in rendering the experimental artworks, which will be produced in light, middle range and heavy values.
If, when using Hybrids, as a method of painting, beautiful artworks can be effectively rendered, and—due to the Gestalt phenomena—the viewer can generate visual recognition of the subject as a whole, while simultaneously noting the pixels that make up the artwork, then a broader application for the Gestalt Effect will have been achieved. In addition, an approach to painting will have been added to the artistic canon that represents a variation on full pixelation.
The proposed project will make use of descriptive, exploratory research into both the Gestalt phenomenon and pixellation, as a way of demonstrating and proposing Hybrids as a valid and legitimate painting method. The written dissertation will document the findings relative to the scientific and artistic bases of the approach, and the companion art project will visually demonstrate the results of the Hybrids method.
Exploratory research is also essential to this research, because no previous literature and study has been made on the subject of Hybrids. Building upon existing scholarship into the Gestalt phenomenon, pixelation, and other artistic principles this researcher will develop new theories regarding hybridization as an artistic approach.
It is anticipated that this study will demonstrate Hybrids as a valid painting approach, capable of rendering a coherent picture of subject matter that can be read as a whole—and in its parts—simultaneously. It is expected that the contribution of the Gestalt Effect will also be recognized and acknowledged. It is further anticipated that the results of this project will be accepted by academia in the arts and sciences, and also adopted by—and adapted—by artists. It is the belief of this researcher that painting should be comprehensible, simple, and lucid in its approach—in order to attract both viewers and artists. Simplicity provides both appreciators and creators with a confidence that encourages their participation—rather than frightening them away.
